The History of The EverDead
Part One: 1998 - 2000 (Origins)
It all began in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan (home to Ash of The Evil Dead films) with Sam, Robert, & Adam, three high school friends that shared a love for shitty horror movies, attractive young girls, and, perhaps most significantly, a love for The Misfits (a late 70's/early 80's horror themed punk rock band fronted by Glenn Danzig). One day in the fall of '98, the three of them decided that starting up a Misfits cover band might be a fun and easy way to score with hot young girls and maybe piss some people off. In an attempt at ironic humor, they dubbed their band 'The Conformists'. The lineup consisted of Adam on vocals (since he had no musical talent and knew every Misfits lyric by heart), Robert on drums, and Sam switching between bass and guitar as different friends came in periodically to fill in the vacancy. Other Conformists members included: Tim-John (guitar), Keith-Cake (bass), and Marc Fury (guitar).
The Conformists existed as a non-functioning band until November of 1999, when Sam, Robert, and Adam decided it was time to forgo the cover band concept and start up a real band. By this time, their love for The Misfits had transgressed to Glenn Danzig's post-Misfits career with his grim occult band Samhain, and his dark metal band simply called Danzig. They wanted their new band to draw musical influence from all three of Danzig's bands, and combine that with the attitude and intense live performances of The Dwarves (a legendary dark and gritty punk rock outfit). They decided to call their new band 'Descension' (they were oblivious to the fact that the name 'Descension' had already been taken by a dark metal band hailing from Kansas). The lineup consisted of Adam on vocals, Sam on guitar, and Robert on drums.
Lacking a bass player, Descension practiced as a trio throughout the winter of '99/00. During that time they recorded a demo entitled 'Black Dawn', which featured rough early versions of the future EverDead songs 'Human Prey' and 'Cut You Up'. Descension came to an abrupt end in February of 2000, when Sam decided to move away from Grand Rapids to pursue a career as a porno director.
Part Two: 2000 - 2001
Many different rumors and legends exist about how The EverDead was actually formed. One rumor insists that The EverDead was nothing more than the result of a group of friends that wanted to create good music while seeing just how far they could take an evil, offensive band that refused to "play by the rules" of the music scene.
That rumor is false.
The truth is, Sam, Robert, & Adam were individually contacted by Jasin the Dark Monk, a talent scout for Satan. He explained that Satan was seeking to gain popularity with the youth of the world by assembling a group of charismatic and highly attractive young men to perform in a satanic themed rock band. The three of them jumped at the opportunity to take part in the project. Jasin then lead them through the demonic realm known as the Badlands to the mysterious Temple of Giznad. Within the Temple they underwent a week long conversion that consisted of them being brutally tortured to death, then having their corpses soaked in the blood of freshly killed infants and the cum of demonic Succubi. At the end of the process they emerged as Undead Demon Rockers fused with Satanic power. They were reborn as Robert Baron (drums), Sam Straker (bass), and Adam Dravean (vocals). To complete the lineup, Satan introduced them to the enigmatic stranger known as Mr. Mysterious (guitars). Thus the most bad-ass evil rock 'n roll band of all time was created: The EverDead.
In March of 2000, this first incarnation of The EverDead ripped forth from the Badlands atop vile murdercycles and immediately began to terrorize and corrupt the Christian Conservative city of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Soon, a handful of songs had been forged and the 'Bone You To Death' demo was recorded. Using the incomplete demo, The EverDead booked their first show. The joy the band felt at the success of their first live performance was abruptly halted when Sam Straker was sent to prison for having sexual relations with several thirteen year old girls. Luckily for The EverDead, Robert Baron and Adam Dravean were able to summon forth the Demon Lord of Sodomy, Count Orlox, who was more than happy to join the band on bass. The new lineup returned to the studio to record their second demo: 'One Bloody Night...". The demo was uploaded to the Internet where the song 'Slumber Party Massacre' gained popularity in the online horror rock community.
On September 27th, 2000, the unpredictable Count Orlox left the band in an attempt to join GWAR where he assumed he'd have a better chance of performing sodomy on young girls. Once again in need of a bassist, The EverDead put out an add in the local paper. Rants Mohammets, a madman that lived alone in the woods, came across the add. He teetered and said "The EverDead? Wow, that sounds fucking retarded. I'll do it." Once again with a full lineup, The EverDead began to play more frequently. Often times that silly Count Orlox would come out of nowhere near the end of their set and violently attack Rants Mohammets. He would then play bass for the rest of the set, only to mysteriously vanish once again.
In May of 2001 Sam Straker was released from prison where he had earned the nickname 'Sam Bones' due to both the amount of girls he had 'boned' and his love for horror movies. He rejoined The EverDead, this time as a second guitarist. However, a couple months later, Mr. Mysterious discovered his calling as a Jet Ski racer and so he opted to leave the band. In November of 2001, after several months of enjoying a somewhat stable lineup, The EverDead decided to expand their sound by adding a keyboardist to the mix. As soon as the idea was presented, Michael Mortis flipped through the floorboards of the practice room and began to pound away at a keyboard that hadn't been there seconds before. The EverDead shrugged and commenced "rocking out".
Part Three: 2002 - 2003
Despite The EverDead's successes, Satan wasn't entirely happy with the way things were going. He thought Robert Baron's Latino heartthrob good looks were wasted behind the drum kit, so in February of 2002, he switched the Baron to bass, sending Rants Mohammets back to his shack in the woods. Saddened by the loss of Rants Mohammets and angry with Satan's control over the band, Sam Straker quit. With only Robert Baron, Adam Dravean and the recently recruited Michael Mortis remaining, they began to record a high quality demo to aid them in the hunt for a record label. The band's new demo songs impressed the hunky young Missourian artist, Rob Villareal, enough for him to offer his artistic services to the band. It wasn't long before @ntidote Records (a newly formed indy label geared towards Horror Rock) heard the demo songs and agreed to release the band's CD. The EverDead began working on their first official release, 'The Slumber Party Massacre EP'.
On a humid day in June of 2002, a portal to the Badlands opened up in the Grand Rapids sky and vomited forth two retched beings that were to become the new members of The EverDead. The cadaverous guitarist Rodney Repulsive, and the unfathomably evil yet sensitive drummer, Bludlux, joined the band not long before the completion of the Slumber Party Massacre EP. The band spent months honing their skills and writing new material while opening up their own venue, which they dubbed the Pirate's Blood. The new lineup made their live debut at the opening night of the Pirate's Blood. The second and final show at the Pirate's Blood was The EverDead's special Samhain (or Halloween, to those of you not hip to the Holiday's history) show to celebrate the release of their EP. The Samhain show featured the return of Sam Straker as a second guitarist, and special guest appearances by Rob Villareal, Jasin the Dark Monk, and the enigmatic ex-EverDead guitarist Mr. Mysterious, who joined The EverDead on stage for the final song of the night. The Halloween show also featured the second and final use of Adam Dravean's giant skull helmet, which was stolen and destroyed a few days later.
At the start of 2003 Sam Straker offered to return to the band full time if the band severed it's ties with the control freak, Satan. After some debate, The EverDead agreed to his terms. Instantly, an enraged Satan appeared before them. He bellowed, "If you want to be released from my contract, you must defeat me in combat!" The EverDead braced themselves for his attack, but before Satan had a chance to take action, Count Orlox sprang from the shadows, plowing into Satan and sending the both of them flying through the vortex that Satan had appeared from! Before the vortex closed they heard Satan's vengeful voice in the distance, "Very well, you're now free to rock on your own terms. Rock on, my brothers!" And although they couldn't see him, they all had the feeling that Satan was making a mean face while throwing up the 'devil horns'. With Sam back in the band, they decided to go back and overdub the guitars on the Slumber Party Massacre EP.
On February 15th 2003, The EverDead took part in a local Battle of the Bands contest, where they found themselves up against the area's most popular Nu-Metal and Christan Hardcore acts. The event was recorded for a potential live album, but Adam Dravean became very sick just before the show, causing him to sing with a deteriorated voice. This put him in a terrible mood and he spent much of the show insulting everyone and trying to instigate fights. Although the entire recording of the show was never released to the public, it somehow managed to leak out and was distributed amongst EverDead fans.
On August 9th 2003, The EverDead performed at the first @ntiFEST event, where they released 'Slumber Party Massacre II', a special edition version of their first EP, which contained a different mix as well as several bonus tracks. As the year of 2003 drew to a close, Rodney Repulsive decided it was time to retire from his guitar duties and returned to the Badlands. Although Rodney was gone, he would always be remembered for writing the acoustic guitar parts in the instrumental EverDead song "The Monks of Giznad". Despite Rodney's departure, the band decided it was time to head into the studio and finally record their first full length album, 'Zombies, Werewolves, & Demons'. Unfortunately, during the recording of the album, Sam Straker fell deep into a drug addiction, which began to cause problems with the band. When the other members of The EverDead finally confronted Sam about it, he flew into a rage and got into a brutal fist fight with Michael Mortis. The epic fight destroyed the band's studio, resulting in the loss of everything they had recorded for the new album. In the wake of that terrible disaster Sam Straker checked himself into a rehab clinic and the rest of The EverDead decide to put the album on hold and take time off from the band.
Part Four: 2004 - 2005 and Beyond ...
2004 saw the members of The EverDead taking a year long vacation from The EverDead. Sam Straker spent the year in rehab recovering from his drug addiction. The Baron made use the year by attempting to beat every single NES game ever released. Bludlux enjoyed a successful year as a popular morning talk-radio personality. Michael Mortis became a licensed Reverend and dabbled in televangelism. Adam Dravean hopped on his murdercycle and rode across the country as a bounty hunter. During his travels he befriended the self proclaimed vampire slayer, Evil Keith.
The start of 2005 saw the glorious reunion of The EverDead. Adam Dravean introduced them to Evil Keith who agreed to join the band on bass, switching Robert Baron over to second guitar duties. However, after only two months, Evil Keith left on a Vampire slaying quest from which he did not return. Assuming that Evil Keith met a face worse than death, The EverDead reverted back to a five piece, with the Baron on bass and Sam on guitar. Adam's brother Ghoul was recruited to created a new and improved website while the rejuvenated EverDead members set about writing new songs in preparation of the long overdue "Zombies, Werewolves, & Demons" CD, which will see the light of day sometime before 2005 is through.
To be continued ...
